Thank you to all of our supporters! We look forward to conducting 2 mission trips in 2011, the first being to restore the homes and lives of the flood victims in the Nashville area. The second mission trip will be a return to the New Orleans area to continue the efforts in rebuilding the lives of Hurricane Katrina victims. We thank you all for your support as without you these efforts would not be possible.

On anniversary of floods, relief groups tout successes, say help still available

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Last year about this time, rain was falling in Nashville in record amounts, swelling the banks of the Cumberland River and leaving a sizeable piece of downtown underwater. The floods that affected much of Middle and West Tennessee would kill 22 people and cause billions in damages, more than $2 billion in Nashville alone.

The United Way of Metropolitan Nashville would soon play a major role in the city's recovery, but at the time, the vice-chair of the nonprofit's board, Gregg Morton, was travelling in the neighboring state of North Carolina.

"We were not back in town until (May 3)," he said. That was the day the river crested at 51.86 feet, almost 12 feet above flood stage. "I knew there had been a 'rain event,' but I had no idea how bad it was."

It's not clear why the disaster didn't get more national attention. Likely other big news events, like the Times Square car bomb and the oil spill in the Gulf, overshadowed the flooding. Morton also favors the idea that the response here was so immediate and well-coordinated that there were not enough negative images to make good TV.

Either way, it meant Nashvillians would be more on their own than the victims of many other disasters. Looking back a year later, it seems they were up to the task.

Morton said the six United Way-sponsored Restore the Dream centers around the city saw 1,199 families come in for help. Of those, 719 families have met their recovery goals. He expects the remaining 480 families to have met their goals by September. Morton estimates there are another 400 or so cases that are being handled by other groups, including many churches and faith-based organizations.

Catholic Charities of Tennessee is providing long-term case management for victims that includes helping families make recovery plans, rebuild their homes and maintain their mental and physical health.

"The coordinated effort that the Nashville/Davidson County community has shown throughout has been amazing," said Wendy Overlock, who coordinates the flood relief efforts for the group. "All the faiths have come together to serve our neighbors."

She stressed that help is still available for victims.

Kathy Thoreson, executive director of Lutheran Services in Tennessee, has been in charge of finding housing for many of the out-of-town volunteers.

"I do think it's true there wasn't much media coverage because of everything else going on," she said. "It was the most serious flooding in the past year in the U.S."

The lack of awareness meant fewer donations coming from out of state, she said.

"Financially it's been a little tricky," she said. Much of the money has been raised locally, "whereas with some disasters it just pours in from all over because there's so much exposure."

But out-of-state volunteers have been forthcoming thanks to faith-based organizations spreading the word about the need in Tennessee.

Brandon Huelette, the director of Mercy, Ministry and Disaster Recovery for the Tennessee conference of the United Methodist Church, coordinates out-of town volunteers who come to help with rebuilding. He said he has worked with volunteers from 43 different faith groups, including Jewish and Muslim groups and numerous Christian denominations.

"Certainly in the history of Tennessee, this is the largest ecumenical effort to date for disaster recovery," he said.

But Kevin King, executive director of the Mennonite Disaster Service in Pennsylvania, said recruiting volunteers for flood recovery has been more challenging than with some more high-profile disasters.

When volunteers would call in looking for a project and he would mention Tennessee, they would ask, "What happened there?" he said.
